Psystar pushes its luck, launches new Open (3) Mac clone desktop

Other Mac-cloners may know their time is limited, but good ‘ol Psystar just keeps on forging straight ahead — despite being locked in a nasty legal battle with Apple that could result in it getting shut down any second now. Ignoring that (sophisticated looking) elephant in the corner for a moment, the company has released its latest model, called the Open(3). It sports your choice of processors ranging from a 2.8GHz Core2Duo E7400 up to a 2.53GHz Core2Quad Q8200, up to 4GB of memory, 1TB of storage, a 6x Blu-ray burner, and graphics from an NVIDIA GeForce 9500GT, all packaged in a slim case that, while not quite up to Cupertino standards, certainly looks a fair bit more visually appealing than its previous black boxes. Prices start at just 9, but tick all those option buttons and you’ll be looking at something closer to ,000 — a lot, but close to ,000 less than a comparably spec’d Mac Pro. Get ‘em while you can.

mmmm… beeeeer :)

499Believe it or not, yesterday I learnt there are people who don’t like beer. However, I’m sure they won’t be able to resist the charm of Beer2-D3, which is as cute as B3-3R.

Artist Paul Loughridge made this 16-inch tall astrokeg using a 4.7 liter beer keg and the following elements:

Head - 1945 chrome BLC utility light shell.
Eye - vintage movie camera lens w/adjustable spring-loaded aluminum casing.
Legs - propane tank valve handles, brass spacers, drilled-out washers, pair of aluminum Lady Josephine shoe butler (wall-mounted shoe shine holders).
Feet/base - 3 mini bread loaf pans, lamp hardware and a 1/2″ precision drilled aluminum base plate.
+assorted nuts, bolts, screws and, of course - lockwashers!

Head to Bonnie Burton’s interview with Paul for more details about his cool artwork. [Star Wars Blog]

Eikö läppärillä photoshoppaaminen oikeen luonnistu ja meneekö värimääritykset ja gammat vituralleen? Noh osta teltta läppärille, se auttaa hieman ;)

228Envious of your friend’s giant view camera and the cool dark shroud it requires to compose and image and load with film? The Pixel Sunscreen laptop shade for photogs in the field is for you.

The foldable nylon lappie tent springs out of your camera bag to shade your screen from the sun, so you can post-process and upload to your heart’s content without having to find the press room. They’re (ouch?). [Product Page and Imaging Resource Review via Gadget Lab]

Tässä erittäin mielenkiintoinen projekti, jossa halpa pokkari lämästään 20mailin korkeuteen helium-pallolla ja otetaan sieltä hieman korkeampia ilmavalokuvia. Projektin sivuille tästä klikkaamalla.

603Using a Nikon Coolpix and a latex balloon filled with helium, a team of teenage students captured these remarkable shots from 20 miles above the Earth’s surface.

Radio-synced to Google Earth, the team tracked the package as it soared 885 feet per minute into the sky, taking shots on a periodic timer. The balloon eventually failed around 100,000 before the system parachuted to the ground.

(We paraphrased. If you read the entire account over on the students’ page, you’ll appreciate details like the team running out of laptop batteries to track the experiment and knocking on neighborhood doors for access power. It’s basically got all of the good-hearted excitement of a Disney movie.)

The students were able to recover the package that landed about 6 miles from the launch site., but it was only after they tentatively extracted the SD card sitting safely inside that they discovered the fantastic fruits of their labor. [Project Page via Telegraph and boingboing]
