Oh hello, again, you Cold War you! As if we didn’t have enough problems with worldwide economic collapse, the Russians are now testing President Obama’s nuclear balls placing strategic nuclear bombers in Cuba and Venezuela:

There are four or five airfields in Cuba with 4,000-meter-long runways, which absolutely suit us.

That’s what tovarishch Major General Anatoly Zhikharev—chief of staff of the Russian Air Force's long-range aviation—told Russian news agency Interfax, adding that "if the two chiefs of state display such a political will, we are ready to fly there."

So basically, the Russians are now at the dick-waving testing-the-new-guy stage. Add this to the Chinese plans to build carrier battlegroups and their recent harassment against a US Navy oceanographic ship in international waters, and you will have a pretty grim picture of what may be brewing. 356Flight enthusiast Matthew Sheil has built a 747-400 flight simulator in his Sydney warehouse that can stand up to any million training version—and he did it for under 0,000.

Thanks to 45 different software programs running on 14 different computers, the simulator allows Sheil to fly to and from 27,000 different airports around the world with breathtaking realism.

Sheil is part of a growing network of enthusiasts from around the globe that serve as pilots and air traffic controllers in a virtual word. This network is amazingly complex:

In Sheil’s simulator, computer screens replace the windows and if he is flying in the virtual world behind a person in Melbourne, and they are using a Qantas 767, “we actually see a Qantas 767 out the window - the software puts it in there for us - and he sees us”.

Moreover, if Sheil flies through Russia, he is greeted by a volunteer Russian air traffic controller. Cars can be seen on the road when he comes in to land and people wave at him from the terminals.

What’s even more amazing is that he managed to build the simulator for around 0,000 AUD (around 7,000 US) whereas professional training simulators can cost upwards of million. This was made possible largely through donated parts given to Sheil because of his charity work. In return, all of the money he earns renting out the simulator is donated to the Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS). Still, this remarkable feat earned him the Guinness record for the “world’s most expensive home flight simulator” (because Guinness will give out records for anything nowadays). As far as the cheapest is concerned, it would be hard to beat the ,000 bedroom 747 simulator in terms of value. [SMH via Fark]

452The Draganflyer X6 has been around for a bit now, but only recently have Canadian law enforcers begun using it to serve and protect. Here’s the first look at these flying UAVs in uniform.

The X6 is a spy drone with wireless video and still cameras (in hi-def, infra-red and 0 lux flavors) that can fly autonomously, or as a remote-controlled bot. It has 11 sensors (including gyros, accelerometers, barometers, magnetometers and GPS) and is so easy to pilot, a Wii gamer could do it. Now it will be used by the Ontario Provincial Police and the Saskatoon Police to patrol crime scenes and help gather evidence.

At it’s core, this is the same Draganflyer X6 we’ve come to know and love in the past, but now with a shiny police badge and a healthy distaste for crime. Canadian perps, be afraid. Be very, very afraid. [Draganfly]
